Q: how is Netherworks' Pose Writer better than just saving a pose to the pose library?

I just installed the most recent beta, and I wanted to share my notes on the installation process before I start putting the beta figure to the test.

Based on the way you set up the beta's installation folder, I'm guessing you expect users to install everything manually? I always do so myself, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people just extract a zip to their runtime and expect everything to go where it's supposed to. So you might want to make it super clear that users need to do this install manually.

I also have some suggestions for organizing the contents of the installation folder, based on my experience. If you like a suggestion, feel free to use it; if you don't, feel free to ignore it!

(1) Don't fill up otherwise empty folders with the {GO TO FOLDER} shortcut. Instead, offer it it in the Other Utilities folder so that users who want it can copy it into whatever library folders they choose. Mac users don't need the shortcut, so I had to delete a ton of them!

(2) Put the Set Color Gadget in the Materials library rather than Props, since the gadget is designed to work with materials.

(3) Move the SASHA-16 INJECTIONS folder into the Pose library folder and consider renaming it to something like SASHA-16 MORPHS (since the teen INJ is basically a character morph like people are used to using for V4).

NOTE: With the folder where it is now, users can't access its contents from Poser's library panel.

FYI: in the two Python folders you included with the beta, you have some duplicate files with different Last Edited dates
NOTE: I recommend re-naming the PoseWriter ignore filenames to something that clarifies that users should add the contents to the existing files, rather than replacing them, in case their existing files already have lists for other figures (as mine do).

FOR EXAMPLE: I keep all of my "base" files for V4 (including your S-16 setup folder) inside the Character/DAZ Victoria 4 folder that was created when I first installed V4. I consider those the "factory default starters," and I don't want to risk messing those up by saving something I modified inside that top-level folder. So instead I use a separate top-level folder for CHARACTERS-V4, which is where I save an S-16 that I've loaded with the morphs I typically use and applied my default skin mats. So that figure becomes my "starter" when I want to set up a new character, and I use dedicated sub-folders for each recurring character.

FYI: I would ordinarily put something like your S-16 manual in a subfolder of my Runtime/Readme folder called POSER HELP DOCS, which has a shortcut on my Finder sidebar for easy access. But now I'm not sure how to access the new manual when I don't have Poser open. I guess I could have Safari save a bookmark for: Data/! Karina/html/MANUALS/SASHA-16 Manual.html

I have been brooding over your suggestions since I saw them yesterday, and indeed you made some good points there!

It's true:
I do ALWAYS install any content manually because that gives me full control over the process, and I will be able to find what I'm looking for.
In fact I never needed the Poser "Search Library" before.

I absolutely despise "Installer Programs" such as the old-style DAZ installers, or anything else which installs files to where I may not want them.
I really hate black boxes!


But then, it was a revelation how other users install their content.
I'll think about how to reorganize the file and folder structure this weekend.
Just be aware that not ALL your suggestions can't be heeded because in some cases it's simply because otherwise Poser wouldn't find the associated files.

I'll report back as soon as I have an alternative layout!

Hi PRV and Karina,

I let the installers install their files where they like.

I use Poser's favourites libraries and create shortcuts into a structure that I understand... Works really well.

Seems a bit of a pfaff, but done when something is installed is good.

I also found a mac script that will duplicate a folder structure but instead of copying the files, it creates shortcuts and that has saved me hours!

Can supply if needed, and am happy to.

I figured out how to export a MorphBrush morph out of Poser 11 Pro for injection. It wasn't pretty.

I cheat, I just save the character with the morph to the library, then use Dimension3D's Binary Morph Editor To extract and save the morph as an injection. Then delete the character.

Yes, I looked up that D3D and saw it was in the marketplace, which might not have stopped me. But I persisted until I figured out the "Poser way."

Now that i figured it out, exporting a morph is easy! I don't know if this is Poser 11 Pro only or not, however ....

Select your body part, open the morph brush, make your change. Close the tool and the morph is saved.

Then, File:Export:Morph Injection



Then, select none. Scroll down until you see your morph's name, check it. Hit "okay"



... the .pz2 will be saved where you told it to. The .pz2 is 1.75 K in size.



I copied the .pz2 and the .pmd (I don't know what that is) into a known pose folder in my runtime, and injected/applied it to a fresh Sasha. It worked.

Just FYI: there are SO MANY things I love about S-16, and about your SR1 improvements, but in the interest of helping you with beta testing, I'm only taking notes on issues that come up (not on all the grreat stuff I'm enjoying playing with!)

When I clicked on S-16 MANUAL in the 4 - SASHA-16 MANUALS folder, nothing happened. Not sure why!

In the 2 - ADDITIONAL MORPHS folder, there's no loader for Girl4 morphs. I'm not sure how many people use Girl4's body shape, but I do use the head shape and the expressions. (And I can always load them from my Pose folder.)

Is the NeckHeadTwist dial meant to have limits set that allow Sasha to perform in the Excorcist?!

Under SCALING, the Torso dials don't have limits set, which can produce some pretty weird results!

Under Body Proportions (which I believe are from Stephanie4), the Stout dial made her shorter and the Short dial made her stouter.

Under Upper Torso: Is she supposed to have two ClaviclesDefine dials?

Under CDI Morphs, the dials all appear and can be turned, but they don't do anything. That would be fine if I had the Morphia package and had applied it, but I don't, so it's a wee bit confusing! I suppose the only way to remove those dials is to delete each manually (or to edit the CR2)?

The section below Morphs++ is labelled A4 / G4 but has nothing in it. The Aiko4 expressions appeared further down, below Visemes.

The Poser library's "Favorites" function basically creates an alias with a "hard coded" path to the original item. So if you change the name of the folder the item is in, then the favorite no longer works. And if you go by the username "PerpetualRevision," you are going to do a lot more than just change a few folder names!

It's taken me several years to get my Runtime organized in a way that works best for me, and yet I still occasionally rename or reorganize items, which means I have no use for the "Favorites" panel.

Instead, I always have my Runtime open in the Mac's Finder, and I've used color-coded folder icons to make it easy to spot certain types of items. I've also used a ton of different Finder tags to make it easy to find what I'm looking for (like, say, footwear for V4 or dresses for Mavka). I even have some "last modified date" searches saved as shortcuts in the Finder sidebar to make it easy to find the figure or prop I was most recently working with.

The way I see it, it's more useful to have all my Poser stuff organized using the computer's OS features than it would be to use such features within Poser, as I sometimes need access to stuff (for example, for use within Photoshop and/or my 3D modeler) when Poser isn't even running.
