As I mentioned to K I have been doing outside rendewrs composited into pictures.

K's plautenbauste (spelling??) was fun to try.

Not 100% right yet but fun trying.

Plautenbauste ? Only if you have been run over by an IFA truck you spell it that way. It's Plattenbaute.

Photomontage ? 2D images ? Why did I make such nice 3D objects if you are simply going to hang a picture behind your figures ? They are (still) free for download at Sharecg. Including some Plattenbauten as shown by the ladies below.

Well, this method I use is very easy.

Just loaded into teh render program and set the horizon and foreplane.

Getting the colour matching just right is tricky part!

There is actually only 1 day of sightseeing in Berlin city, the rest is spent at the fair.
Also, many of the 2017 pictures were made with a Praktica BC1 and the film hasn't been developed yet.
So this will be a compilation of my visits in 2011, 2012,2013 and or 2017.

OPERATION BERLIN 2017

Prelude

Getting to Berlin by train should be easy : by car to the local train station (with free parking). Then first train to Brussel-Zuid. There the ICE to Köln. And finally the ICE to Berlin Hbf. No border controls, first class service (if you think I am going to sit with the Proletariat in 2nd class ...). Except for a few problems in the past :
defect signals (40 km/h instead of 250 km/h) and a detour because of flooding.



Nothing serious though until this year : EXACTLY on the day of my departure the Socialist Railway Union decides it's time for a strike. Never mind for what reason, it's just been to long since the last one.
It was not possible to change the train ticket but I would be warned in time if anything changed about my train.
I was warned "in time", at 21h40 the night before. Train cancelled with simple advice to travel on another day.
Of course I had already planned an alternative route, "Operation F**k The NMBS". This consisted of going by car to the nearest German train station, Aachen, and to continue there by train.
As the other guy said "I love it when a plan comes together".

If you don't know what an ICE looks like, this is one in Köln Hbf. Fast but little room for large luggage.

That was pretty fast too.

In Belgium at least the the high-speed lines are protected by high fences and other security measures. Nothing gets on the tracks "by accident".

The first "high-speed" train I used was the "Intercity-125" from London King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverley. That was back in the 1980's.

Let's continue about Berlin ...

Since I only spend 1 or 2 days sightseeing I always pick one or two things I want to see : the Fernsehturm, the DDR museum, The STASI museum. This year the choice was the Deutsches Technik Museum (West-Berlin) and a boatride on the Spree (East-Berlin).

The nearest underground station (which is actually an elevated station) for that museum is Gleisdreieck. Some of the Berlin scenes of "Bridge of Spies" were shot around here. For the other Berlin scenes they used a Polish city which still looks as East-Berlin in the 1960s.

On my way to the museum I passed the BCB, the annual bar convention. All those bars ... only for professionals unfortunately.

The museum is easy to locate, look for the C-47, a "Rosinenbomber". One of the airplanes that helped west-Berlin to survive the Russian blockade in 1948. Oh, those nasty Russians.



This is a serious museum not a tourist attraction/trap, as indicated by the rather low entrance fee (8 Euro). Way too many school children though.

Inside I couldn't take much pictures, not being sure if photography with flash was allowed or not. You could spend a day here but those many stairs, they were killing me. The museum was (re)build in 1982 out of ruins and meanwhile the place had been overgrown with trees and plants and some of this wilderness was preserved on purpose. Oh, those weird Germans.

This is a real 1/87th scale station. Place this on your railway layout in your attic ! Depicted is the former Anhalter Bahnhof in the 1920s - 30s. I've got a lot of those vehicles in my collection too, mostly Wiking and Roskopf as sold off the shelf.
Some small pieces of the real bahnhof are on display too.
